Theplication delivers powerful, integrated management capabilities by gathering detailed fault, performance and configuration data from the switch itself and the surrounding switch fabric. SwitchMan is a member of SynOptics' LattisWare(tm) Solutions family human productivity and diagnostic tools that simplify and automate the management of extended enterprise networks. The applications take critical network health, status and performance data gathered throughout the network and transform it into useful, actionable management information. Three Applications in One The SwitchMan application is composed of three distinct components - SwitchView, MatrixView and DesignView - which provide varying levels of functionality for managing Ethernet switches. SwitchView(tm) utilizes the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) and MIB objects jointly developed by SynOptics and Kalpana to provide an effective stand-alone solution for determining switch status and monitoring switch performance. MatrixV(tm) and DesignView(tm), working in conjunction with SynOptics Model 331xS Advanced Ethernet Network Management Modules, deliver even more powerful switch management capabilities. MatrixView presents detailed information regarding network traffic patteving through the switch, while DesignView provides a unique simulation feature which enables network managers to simulate the movement of end-stations from one switch port to another to determine the switch's optimum configuration. SwitchView SwitchView provides an intuitive, graphics-based solution for obtaining and reviewing real- time fault, performance and configuration data from Ethernet switches. Launching SwitchView reveals the main window, a color-coded interface which graphically depicts the status of the switch and each of the interfaces being utilized. A variety of buttons under Configuration, Fault and Performance headings may be selected to obtain more detailed information regarding the switch or individual ports. Using a mouse, the network manager can summon real-time graphical history charts, pop-up statistics windows and detailed fault logs for the entire switch or for single ports. Users can also enable or disable ports, clear the internal address tables or perform soft or hard switch resets from the SwitchView window. Because the application communicates directly with the SNMP agent on the Ethernet Switching Engine, it represents an excellent stand-alone device management solution. MatrixView SwitchMan's MatrixView provides a real-time display depicting data passing through the switch, enabling the network manager to see at a glance the network traffic patterns developing in a switched Ethernet environment. Based entirely on data provided by SynOptics Model 331xS Advanced Ethernet network management modules installed in System 3000(tm) hubs, MatrixView utilizes a simple graphical interface to indicate segment utilization, as well as switch utilization on a port-pair basis. Whenever frames are switched betweenrts, a line appears between the pair to indicate activity. A color-coded display, defined by user-specified thresholds, indicates the relative amount of data involved in the transmission. Pull-down menus available within the display provide graphical and statistical data regarding network traffic patterns. Network managers can use this information to identify top traffic- generating stations on each port, the utilization level of any selected segment, or the utilization of any cross-switch pair. DesignView DesignView delivers a powerful feature that enables the network manager to utilize historical data collected from the network to simulate various switch configurations for determining optimal port assignments. Leveraging information collected from Model 331xS Advanced Ethernet network management modules, DesignView plots network activity over a specified period of time and uses this data - such as byte and frame counts by MAC layer source and destination address pairs - to characterize traffic on the selected segment. Network managers can then "reassign" individual end- stations to new ports and "play back" the traffic to see how the changes would affect the network. This simulation feature enables network managers to experiment with design modifications without actually changing the network, eliminating the need to physically change connections in a trial-and- error search for optimal configurations. DesignView can also make recommendations on how to configure the switch. Network managers simply indicate the number of available switch ports. The application, using sophisticated algorithms, automatically determines where to place end-stations to optimize network segment performance. Once a design is implemented, MatrixView can be used to monitor the configuration and provide feedback that allows the network manager to further refine the network. Compatibility SwitchView manages SynOptics' Model 3328 Ethernet Switching Engine (ESE(tm)), as well as SNMP-equipped Kalpana EtSwitch devices, including the EPS 1500 and EPS 500. The application can serve as a stand-alone switch management solution, using SwitchView to provide comprehensive monitoring and control capabilities. SwitchMan can also be integrated with SynOptics' UNIX-based Optivity for SunNet Manager network management system. Integration with Optivity enables all network devices, including routers, bridges, hubs and end stations, to be monitored and controlled from a single, centralized management station.
